In sport, a photographer who reacts to the action is always late. Everything is decided beforehand: knowing the course, where the overtake happens, where the pack arrives, when the manoeuvre becomes decisive.
That preparation is what separates a usable set of images from a set missed by half a second. On the TGS student regatta, which brought together 20 competing teams, it meant knowing the water before the competitors did.
Motorsport imposes its own rules: high subject speeds, restricted trackside access, safety. Panning and the choice of vantage point matter more than burst rate.
The aim is to convey speed rather than freeze it, a perfectly sharp motorbike against a sharp background says nothing about movement.
Dance and choreographed disciplines are as much performance as sport: difficult stage lighting, fast movement, and an extra demand on catching the precise instant when the line of the body is right.
It's work closer to concert coverage than to the touchline, and it draws on the same reflexes: scouting, anticipation, discretion.
