Telling a place, not cataloguing it
A good travel film doesn't show everything: it chooses. The trap of the format is a pile-up of handsome shots with no thread, pleasant for ten seconds and interminable thereafter.
My Iceland and Norway films each start from one simple idea, northern lights and volcanoes in one case, chasing the aurora through the fjords in the other, and everything else serves that idea. That constraint is what makes a film hold up beyond the pretty picture.
